Der Hessische Rundfunk plant die Abschaffung der letzten qualitativ hochwertigen Musik-Autorensendungen in seinem Programm. Wegen mangelnder Quoten, im Sinne der "Durchhörbarkeit" (aua).

Betroffen ist unter anderem die Sendung "Der Ball ist rund" von Klaus Walter. Seit 25 Jahren im Programm, ist sie inzwischen eine Institution, die mehrere Generationen musikalisch sozialisiert hat. Walter ist einer der mit Abstand kompetentesten Musikjournalisten Deutschlands, der auch mit über 50 noch am Puls neuer musikalischer Entwicklungen ist.

Qualifiziertes Autoren-Musikradio darf nicht nur noch ehrenamtlich bei Byte.fm oder den Bürgerradios stattfinden. Dafür zahlen wir auch Rundfunkgebühren! Dreißig Jahre ist es mittlerweile her, das mit Saturday Night Fever Discomusik den Mainstream eroberte. Diese Musik und der dazu gehörende Lebensstil hatte sich in den 70er Jahre in den schwulen Clubs und Badehäusern New Yorks entwickelt, wo die Männer die im Laufe der Emanzipationsbewegungen der 60er Jahre, besonders nach den Stonewall-Riots 1969, gewonnen neuen Freiheiten ausgiebig auslebten - mit Party und Sex. Zur beliebtesten Tanzmusik entwickelte sich die Soulmusik, besonders der opulente Philly-Sound, und später Funk. Die Parties waren so beliebt, dass auch heterosexuelle Hipster bald die einschlägigen Läden überrannten.

Immer neue Discoschuppen machten zunächst in Manhatten, bald aber auch in anderen Großstädten wie San Francisco und Miami auf. Ebenso entwickelte sich die Musik weiter zu einem eigenständigen Stil. Frühe Discotitel wie George Mc Crae's "Rock Your Baby" eroberten Mitte der 70er die Charts. Einflüsse lateinamerikanischer Kultur kamen dazu, als die jugendlichen Hispanics aus der Bronx die Freuden der Disco entdeckten ("Do the Hustle"). Um die Tänzer länger bei der Stange zu halten wurden lange Mixe produziert und Songs auf Maxisingles, den so genannten 12-Inches ausgedehnt. DJs - häufig schwule Italo-Amerikaner - und Produzenten wurden oft prominenter als die Musiker und Interpreten der Songs. Die kulturelle Schickeria ließ sich in den beliebtesten Discos wie dem berühmten Studio 54, in die nur die Schönen und Reichen gelassen wurden, sehen - und gehen.

Nach Saturday Night Fever 1977 wurde Disco für zwei Jahre der neueste Schrei im Mainstream: aus der schwulen, durch nicht weiße Elemente geprägten Subkultur wurde die Musik der weißen, heterosexuellen angepassten Masse. Bald war die Musik omnipräsent. So nahmen sogar die Rolling Stones - Jagger war zu dieser Zeit ein eifriger Partygänger in New York - einige recht gelungenen Disco-Titel auf. Allerdings war das Gros der Musik Ramschware und es nervte. Zudem störten sich einige an dem schwulen Geschlechterleitbild, was für einige Jahre hip war. So wurde Disco 1979 zumindest im US-amerikanischen Mainstream für tot erklärt. In Europa lebte sie noch fröhlich in der Italo- und Eurodisco weiter, die sich jedoch stärker auf eine europäische Poptradition als auf afro- und lateinamerikanische Wurzeln bezog. Im Underground entwickelte sich House und später Techno, wo es bis heute starke Bezüge zu Disco gibt.

Heute, am 13. Dezember, gibt es bei Stereo zwischen 16 und 17 Uhr einen kleinen musikalsichen Rundumschlag, von ersten, auf Disco hindeutenden Soulnummern bis zu den "Auswirkungen" von Disco auf andere Kulturen und Musikstile.

Antifolk ist eine Mischung aus Punk und Folk, die sich in den 80er Jahren in der New Yorker Lower East Side entwickelt hat. Das Team von Flockenpop veranstaltet seit einiger Zeit in Hannover eine Konzertreihe mit Antifolk-Künstlern. In diesem Zusammenhang ist heute Veranstalter Mario Moers zu Gast in der Sendung Stereo, zu hören hier auf Radio Flora zwischen 16 und 17 Uhr. Er wird etwas zu den Bands erzählen, die in den nächsten Tagen und Wochen in Hannover zu Gast sind, wie der New Yorker Jeffrey Lewis (Foto). Dazu gibt es Hintergrundinformationen zu Antifolk und weitere Veranstaltungstipps in diesem Bereich.

Marc Bolan/T. Rex-Special

Der Musiker Marc Bolan verunglückte vor 30 Jahren wenige Tage vor seinem 30. Geburtstag tödlich. Damals war seine Karriere schon auf dem absteigenden Ast. Anfang der 70er war er mit seiner Gruppe T. Rex das Idol einer Generation gewesen. War der erste Star des Glam Rock. Die Hysterie, die die Band unter den Teenagern auslöste, wurde mit der um die Beatles verglichen.
Radio Flora würdigt den Künstler am 16. September. Unter anderem gibt es ein Special im Rahmen der Sendung “Rückspiegel” von 11-12 Uhr. Als Vorgeschmack gibt es schon am 6. September ein Special mit Interviews mit Fans der ersten Stunde, die berichten, wie sie die Zeit erlebt haben, und mit Bolans langjährigem Produzenten Tony Visconti.

Ein sehr trauriger Tag für Radio Flora

Unser lieber Freund und radio flora- Gründungsmitglied Petja Wundenberg ist heute Nachmittag nach längerer Krankheit verstorben. Er wurde nur 55 Jahre alt.
Wir von radio flora verdanken Petja sehr viel und werden ihn sehr vermissen.
Kaum eine andere Person hat ihr Wirken so in den Dienst unseres Senders gestellt, wie Petja. Die Ideen von Petja machen einen großen Teil des Erfolgs von radio flora aus, im vergangenen Jahr wurde ihm die radio flora Ehrenmitgliedschaft verliehen. Auch in der jüngsten Programmreform findet sich Vieles von Petjas Vorstellungen eines engagierten bürgernahen Radios.
Unsere Gedanken sind mit Petja, seinen Angehörigen und Freunden - wir sind sehr traurig!

R.I.P. TONY WILSON 1950 - 2007

Tony Wilson, co-founder of FACTORY RECORDS, has died at the age of 57.

Wilson passed away on this evening in the hospital after suffering a heart attack that his doctor said was unrelated to his recent battle with cancer. Professor Robert Hawkins, his doctor at Christie hospital, told the Guardian: "It's very sad. He died as a result of something unrelated to his cancer. His cancer was responding well to treatment but obviously did contribute to his poor health".

Born Anthony H. Wilson on February 20, 1950 in Salford, England, he went on to become a renowned broadcast journalist, band manager, record label executive and night club owner.
As the Factory Records boss, he was responsible for signing legendary bands including Joy Division and New Order to his label. Also, as owner of the renowned Hacienda nightclub in Manchester, he played a key role in the Madchester scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s that mixed indie rock and dance music and included artists such as Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses.
The Hacienda, which hosted Madonna's first UK television appearance in 1983, was forced to close in the late 1990s as it was losing money allegedly because its patrons were taking ecstasy rather than buying drinks at the club.
Wilson reportedly became involved in the Manchester music scene in the 1970s when hosting the culture and music programme 'So It Goes' on Granada Television.
After covering a Sex Pistols performance at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976, he described the experience as "nothing short of an epiphany" and booked the band for one of the first television broadcasts of British punk rock.
These aspects of Wilson's life were later chronicled in the semi-fictional 2002 feature film '24 Hour Party People', in which he was portrayed by British actor Steve Coogan.
More recently, Wilson was involved in In The City, a yearly music festival and conference that takes place in Manchester and New York City, which he co-founded with his partner Yvette Livesey.
In 2005 he launched F4, the fourth incarnation of the Factory Records label.

Earlier this year, the music mogul was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery to have one of his kidneys removed.

We are sad to announce that LEE HAZLEWOOD has died peacefully at his home outside Las Vegas, USA, after a three year struggle with cancer. He celebrated his 78th birthday earlier this month surrounded by family and friends from around the world. He passed away on August 4th, 2007, in Henderson, Nevada, and is survived by his son Mark, his daughters Debbie and Samantha, and his devoted wife Jeane.

For over half a century, LEE HAZLEWOOD proved himself to be one of the most ingenious, inspired and impressively stubborn sons-of-a-bitch the music industry ever saw. His career – a word that HAZLEWOOD himself scorned – saw him take on almost every aspect of the music industry – a word that HAZLEWOOD himself was equally dismissive of – and come out on top every time. Most famous for his work with Nancy Sinatra – he wrote and produced many of her biggest hits, including These Boots Were Made For Walking, Sugartown and the unforgettable Some Velvet Morning – HAZLEWOOD in fact started his musical career as a DJ in Coolidge, Arizona. It was here he first met Duane Eddy, with whom he began to flesh out and record some of his songs. In 1955 he set up Viv Records and in 1956 hit paydirt with Sanford Clark's legendary The Fool, and the following year he gave up DJing to focus on production and writing. In the early 1960s he established the LHI label (which is best known for having released the debut album by Gram Parson's first group, The International Submarine Band) and began releasing his own solo albums, including the extraordinary "Trouble Is A Lonesome Town".

In the mid sixties, in the face of The British Invasion (led by the likes of The Beatles), HAZLEWOOD retired to the shadows (where he was always most comfortable) only to be reluctantly dragged out to work with Nancy Sinatra. Their work together – including the iconic Boots – was an overnight success and saw her become a star in her own right worldwide, but she also insisted that HAZLEWOOD step out in front of the microphone himself, leading to the release of three "Nancy & Lee" albums.

In the early 1970s HAZLEWOOD moved to Sweden to ensure his son was not drafted by the US military. He recorded a series of solo albums there as well as collaborating with film director Torbjörn Axelman, but then 'retired' again, working only occasionally over the next two decades. Instead he began to follow an itinerant lifestyle which he pursued until very recently, living in Ireland, Germany, Spain and of course America. However it was the rediscovery of this work two decades later by a new generation of musicians – including the likes of Sonic Youth, whose drummer Steve Shelley tracked HAZLEWOOD down and reissued a number of his solo albums on his Smells Like Records imprint – that led to a resurgence of interest in his work as a performer. In the late 90s he returned to the studio to record the typically cryptically titled standards album "Farmisht, Flatulence, Origami, ARF!!! and Me", and in 1999 he returned to the stage at the invitation of Nick Cave who was curating that year's Meltdown Festival in London. Following a sold out show at the Royal Festival Hall he sanctioned the release of two albums of unreleased material, most notably "For Every Solution There's A Problem", toured Europe, and then returned to the studio to record his final album, "Cake Or Death", which was released to worldwide acclaim in 2006.

HAZLEWOOD's music has always been a staple of movie soundtracks, but it has continued to become more and more fashionable, regularly turning up in films as diverse as The Dukes Of Hazzard – which saw Jessica Simpson perform These Boots Were Made For Walking for the title track – and the arthouse flick Morvern Callar – which used Some Velvet Morning to great effect.

Radio Flora droht Lizenzverlust

Am 05. März hat sich der Ausschuss für Bürgerrundfunk
und Medienkompetenz gegen eine Lizenzverlängerung
für radio flora ausgesprochen. Dieser Unterausschuss der
Versammlung der Niedersächsischen Medienanstalt
fasst keine eigenen Beschlüsse, sondern erarbeitet
Empfehlungen - sowohl positive und als auch ablehnende
- für die übergeordnete Versammlung.

Schließt sich die Versammlung der Landesmedienanstalt
am 22. März dieser Empfehlung an, würde das bedeuten,
dass die Lizenz des Bürgerradios am 31. März 2009
ausläuft. Bei einer Neuausschreibung der Frequenz
106,5 Megaherz könnte sich radio flora wieder neu
bewerben, müsste sich aber gegen mögliche Mitbewerber
durchsetzen..
Hintergrund für die ablehnende Haltung des Fachausschus-
ses ist eine Emnid-Reichweitenumfrage deren Ergebnis
radio flora gerade einmal 0,3 Prozent Stammhörer
zurechnet.
radio flora hatte auf diese negative Bescheinigung mit einer
umfassenden Programmreform reagiert und ein Konzept
entwickelt, dass in dem Ausschuss auch grundsätzlich
positiv aufgenommen wurde. Dieser Schritt alleine reichte
allerdings nicht aus, um den Ausschuss zu einer positiven
Empfehlung zu bewegen.
Mit dem Verlust der Lizenz würden nicht nur ca. 400
freiwillige MitarbeiterInnen und 560 Mitglieder ihren Vereins-
zweck verlieren, sondern auch 26 ArbeitnehmerInnen,
darunter 9 Auszubildende und ein Volontär, ihre Arbeits-
und Ausbildungsplätze.
Inzwischen haben sich sowohl die Grünen, der DGB, die SPD
und Oberbürgermeister Weil sich öffentlich für eine
Weiterlizenzsierung ausgesprochen.

Da die endgültige Entscheidung erst am 22. März fällt,
geben die Radiomachenden noch nicht auf und kämpfen bis
zu diesem Tage für die Lizenzverlängerung.

Heute soll es um zwei scheinbar ganz unterschiedliche, aber doch gar nicht so weit von einander entfernte Skamusiker bzw. -bands gehen: den 1934 geborenen britisch-jamaikanischen Posaunisten Rico Rodriguez und die (relativ ;)) junge New-Yorker Band The Slackers.

Rodriguez ist seit den 1950er Jahren musikalisch aktiv und gehört zu den stilprägenden Posaunisten des Ska. Er war Teil der ersten und der zweiten Ska-Welle und ist bis heute musikalisch aktiv. Unter Ska-Afficionados gilt er als Legende. Garantiert gehörten auch seine Aufnahmen zu dem Gepäck, was der New-Yorker Musiker Dave Hillyard anschleppte, als er zu der gerade gegründeten New-Yorker Ska-Band The Slackers stieß und sie vom alten jamaikanischen Ska überzeugte.

Neben viel Musik gibt es biografische Anmerkungen zu Rico Rodriguez und zu den Slackers Interviewausschnitte (hier zu Teil schon vorzuhören) und eine CD-Verlosung.

Hier seid ihr beim Blog der Sendung "Spektrum" (ehemals "Stereo") bei Radio Flora. Hier findet ihr Playlists, Ankündigungen und Tipps. Seit August 2006 senden wir jeden 2., 4. und 5. Freitag im Monat von 20.30 Uhr bis 22 Uhr "Musik aus allen Ecken". Man könnte es auch querbeet nennen, aber das klang uns ein wenig zu beliebig. Jeder von uns hat seine Spezialstrecken, aber keine Scheuklappen. Viel Spaß beim hören und lesen.
